Spatial distribution of remnant forest trees in Nothofagus original
forests-oak forest type RaulĂ-Coigue (Nothofagus forests dominated by deciduous) subtype for the remaining originals are very scarce. These forests are dominated by Nothofagus obliqua (Oak), Laurelia sempervirens (Laurel), and Persea lingue (Lingue). Ever virgin forests of this type covered the Intermediate Depression south-central Chile. These forests may be considered unique in the world and have a high biodiversity, but are not represented in the national system of protected areas in Chile. Indiscriminate changes in land use in the past (specifically the empowerment of agricultural land) are now only some remnants exist. Despite its conservation importance, few studies have focused on these forests. Salas and colleagues studied the spatial distribution patterns of living and dead trees standing in a mature forest composed mainly of oak Olivillo ( Aextoxicon punctatum) and other species tolerant and tolerance to shade. Studied a forest remnant located in Rucamanque (20 km from Temuco). The spatial distribution of Olivillo (the dominant species) change from random to small intervals of distance to a clustered spatial distribution analysis over longer distances. Oak tended to be more evenly distributed in space. The authors found a negative spatial interaction (ie repulsion) between small trees (generally less than 100 years) and high (generally greater than 250 years). On the other hand, detected a positive spatial interaction (ie attraction) between small trees and snags. Source
